Basic Sciences

Basic science is the development of knowledge that aids our understanding of all phenomena in the natural world. Basic scientists in our department study the underlying mechanisms of development, normal function and disease processes that affect our ability to communicate. Most of our basic scientists belong to the Fay & Carl Simons Center for the Biology of Hearing & Deafness. Others have research endeavors focused on vestibular function and pathology, cancer biology and the mechanisms of bacterial biofilm formation.
