Alec Salt was selected by the Board of Deans at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (The University of Groningen) in The Netherlands to receive the Guyot prize for "important work of great merits in the field of otological and biological research". The selection was based on a recommendation by the Medical Faculty at Groningen, as well as professors in ENT and Audiology throughout The Netherlands.

The prize, consisting of a bronze medallion, was awarded at an academic ceremony in Groningen which took place in September 1999.

The academic gown is in the colors for the School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, England, from which Dr. Salt received his Ph.D. degree.

The prize was initiated by Mr. H.D. Guyot, who founded the Royal Institute for the Deaf in Groningen. It has been awarded every five years since 1914. Among the distinguished prior recipients of this prize are two individuals who subsequently received Nobel prizes.
