We are pleased to now offer support for underrepresented medical students seeking a visiting elective rotation in otolaryngology.

The Washington University Department of Otolaryngology is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  We believe strongly that recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce of faculty and residents enriches our academic environment and is integral to providing outstanding patient care.  Since certain groups have historically been underrepresented in medicine, it is important that we ensure equitable opportunity for exposure to medicine and our field of otolaryngology.

Our four-week sub-internship provides an experience that:

  • allows students to work alongside our faculty and residents, gaining hands-on experience in clinic and surgery
  • provides exposure to one or more of the sub-specialty services in otolaryngology
  • introduces students to faculty leadership and networking opportunities within the department and University
  • alleviates the financial stress of a visiting rotation by providing a stipend of $2000 to help offset the cost of travel, housing and fees associated with an away rotation

Application process

Please contact Dr. Andrew Drescher at DrescherA@wustl.edu with your intent to apply. Applications are accepted year round.

All applicants to our program go through a set process for all visiting medical students at Washington University, using the Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS).

Applicants must be full-time students in good academic standing in their final year of medical school.  Acceptance is contingent on space availability during the preferred rotation period.

A supplemental application is then submitted to the Office of Diversity Programs (ODP), which includes a brief statement of interest, CV, letter of recommendation, and medical school transcript.  Applications must be submitted at least 4-6 weeks prior to the preferred rotation start.

We will contact applicants as soon as possible following review, generally within two weeks after receipt of completed application materials.
