The Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Washington University celebrated its graduating residents and fellows at a dinner hosted at the Westwood Country Club in St. Louis, MO.
Lindburg Professor and Chair Craig Buchman, MD, honored the chief residents, extolling the virtues of each and reminding them why they chose a residency program at WashU. Vice-chair for Research Jay Piccirillo, MD, recognized graduates Jake Lee, MD, MSCI, and Ricardo Ramirez, MD, MSCI for their accomplishments as T32 research participants. Sub-specialty fellowship directors also shared highlights of their respective fellows’ training and achievements.

Several awards were presented during the evening that highlight special qualities important to academic medicine:
- The Resident Teaching Award was presented to Jake Lee, MD, MSCI, by Director of Resident Education Judith Lieu, MD, MSPH.
- The Faculty Teaching Award was presented to Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology Paul Zolkind, MD, by Chief Resident Zachary Douglas, MD.
- The Joseph M. Chole Humanitarian Award was presented to Ethan Craig, MD, MPH, by Assistant Director of Resident Education Jason Rich, MD.
Buchman also presented a tribute to Allen Sclaroff, DDS, who died Aug. 18, 2021. Sclaroff served as professor and director of the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Washington University from 1991 until his retirement in June 2020.
