Several WashU Medicine Audiology students have submitted their research to be presented at national audiology meetings in the coming months. The scientific efforts reflect capstone projects representative of original contributions to the field of audiology and hearing science.
Scientific mentors include faculty from the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at WashU Medicine. The WashU Med Program in Audiology and Communication Sciences or PACS is home to more than 50 current audiology students. Meetings with student submissions are listed below.
National Hearing Conservation Association Annual Conference – February 5-7, 2026
Fourth year audiology student Brynne Stevens submitted her work, “Surveying Noise Exposure and Hearing Protection Perceptions in Venue Personnel,” to the NHCA Annual Conference. Her mentors include Rosalie Uchanski, PhD, and Brent Spehar, PhD.
American Auditory Society Annual Scientific and Technology Conference – February 26-28
AuD/PhD student Callie Boren will present her work, “Auditory Communication Difficulties and Hearing Empowerment in Older Adults.” Co-authors include Sarah McConkey and Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology Kate McClannahan, PhD.
PhD student Mona Jawad will present her study, “Machine Learning vs Human Responses to Predicting Post-Implantation Speech Perception Outcomes.” Her co-authors include Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology Matthew Shew, MD, Aaron Moberly, MD, Valeriy Shafiro, PhD, Terrin Tamati, PhD, Mike Harris, Cole Pavelchek, and William Bray.
Third year audiology student Rebecca Sims and mentor Kevin Ohlemiller, PhD, will present their work, “Assessment of Frequency Tuning of SGNs in the Cochlear Apex.”
American Academy of Audiology Annual Convention – March 26-29
Audiology student Alyssa Cicalo will present her study, “Hearing Loss and Hair Cell Survival in Murine Congenital CMV.” Her mentors are Keiko Hirose, MD, and Song-Zhe Li, MD, PhD.
