The Department of Otolaryngology continues to attract top talent to our fellowship programs. This summer we welcomed two new fellows: Andrea Hanick, MD, and C. Burton Wood, MD. We asked each to share their thoughts about training at Washington University and living in St. Louis.
Andrea Hanick, MD, is our new fellow in the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. She completed her otolaryngology residency at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Why did you choose to come to WashU for your fellowship?
The fellowship has excellent breadth and depth in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery experiences which made me very interested prior to my interview. After my interview, it was specifically the people that made me rank WashU at the top! I enjoyed my interview day so much and felt a great fit with the personality and motivations of the faculty.
What are you most excited about as you arrive at WashU?
There’s so much to learn, each day has been an excellent opportunity to expand my surgical and clinical skills!
Any positive surprises about St. Louis so far?
The sunny weather and dramatically beautiful lightning storms have been an unexpected plus so far. Not as much of a surprise but certainly positive: everyone is very friendly!
C. Burton Wood, MD, is our new fellow in the Division of Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction. He recently completed his residency in otolaryngology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Why did you choose to come to WashU for your fellowship?
I chose WashU for fellowship because of the impressive volume of complex oncologic procedures combined with a wide variety of procedures performed. It was very clear to me on interview day that drive in this fellowship was to create the most beneficial experience possible for the fellow, and that has certainly been true so far.
What are you most excited about as you arrive at WashU?
I am most excited about finally getting to focus solely on the aspect of our specialty that has always interested me the most.
Any positive surprises about St. Louis so far?
I have been pleasantly surprised by Forest Park. We live minutes from the park, and so I have gone there with my family on a near daily basis since arriving here.
