Hearing science on display at annual meeting

Basic scientists from the Department of Otolaryngology at Washington University assembled in Anaheim, Calif., for the annual Midwinter Meeting of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology (ARO), Feb. 3-7.

The meeting is the largest gathering of hearing and balance scientists in the world. Efforts to advance our understanding of hearing and the disorders that affect hearing were on full display. Contributions from WashU scientists included podium and poster presentations, as well as serving as panelists and moderators for special interest sessions.

One highlight of the meeting was the annual Presidential Symposium, which this year featured results from first-ever gene therapy clinical trials to restore hearing in patients congenitally deaf due to otoferlin mutations, a protein necessary for neurotransmitter release from sensory hair cells.

“The Presidential Symposium and other sessions underscore the real importance of collaboration between clinical and basic scientists,” said Associate Professor of Otolaryngology Mark Rutherford, PhD.
